Job Description
The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing various laboratory tests and procedures, adhering to the laboratory’s protocols while ensuring laboratory quality standards are maintained. This role encompasses a wide array of responsibilities vital for accurate patient diagnosis and treatment support.
Responsibilities
- Perform waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA standards.
- Adhere to laboratory procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
- Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions taken for deviations.
- Identify problems affecting test performance and notify supervisors as necessary.
- Execute a variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment in multiple disciplines.
- Maintain and document the upkeep of laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Review patient results for accuracy prior to reporting.
- Recognize age-specific differences in expected results from newborns to geriatrics.
- Test proficiency samples with the same rigor as patient samples.
- Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients across all age groups.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with safety, infection control, and emergency preparedness policies.
- May take on Lead Technician responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor.
- Perform related tasks as assigned by department management.
Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure
- ASCP certification or equivalent is required.
- Minimum of two years of hospital laboratory work experience.
- Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
- Current and valid state license, if required.
