Job Description

RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC
The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).

Position summary
Under the supervision of students and fellows, the incumbent will contribute with general laboratory maintenance and perform basic molecular and cell biology experiments.

General Duties
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, the incumbent will perform:

Sample reception, processing, and annotation: Receives incoming biological specimens (e.g., blood, tissue, fluids), verifies documentation, performs initial processing (centrifugation, aliquoting), and ensures accurate metadata entry into the biobank database.

Inventory management and storage maintenance: Organizes, labels, and stores specimens in freezers or LN₂ tanks, performs routine temperature monitoring, equipment checks, and maintains accurate real-time inventory.

Quality control and compliance: Ensures that all samples meet biobank quality standards, follows SOPs, assists in audits, and maintains regulatory and ethical compliance (consent tracking, chain-of-custody documentation).

Sample retrieval and distribution: Prepares, retrieves, and ships specimens for approved research projects while maintaining traceability, documentation, and adherence to biosafety protocols.

General laboratory and operational support: Maintains supplies, prepares reagents, performs basic equipment maintenance, and supports continuous improvement of workflows and SOPs within the biobank.

Education: Diploma of College Studies (DEC)

Required Skills

• Excellent French and English, spoken and written,
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
• Ability to work independently or with teams with minimum supervision.

Additional information

Status: Temporary, part-time: 18 hours per week
Pay Scale: $16.14-$26.43/hour. Commensurate with education and experience
Work Shift: Variable Schedule: To be arranged monthly with direct supervisor
Work Site: GLEN Site, 1001 boul. Decarie
