Job Summary:

The Microbiology Medical Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality diagnostic testing on patient specimens in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment. This role operates and maintains advanced laboratory instrumentation, conducts routine and specialized microbiology testing, and ensures accurate, timely reporting of results through the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The technologist adheres strictly to scientific protocols, quality control standards, and regulatory requirements while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety, specimen integrity, and data accuracy.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operating Hologic Panther, DiaSorin Liaison XL, and Vitek2 analyzers for testing patient blood, stool or urine specimens. Experience with these brands is a plus but not required. Training is provided.
  • Loading reagents/consumables into immunoassay analyzers and replenishing them when needed.
  • Performing routine equipment calibrations, and troubleshooting. Documentation of these procedures is required, and the procedures performed must meet established quality control standards.
  • Making sure patient specimens are acceptable, labelled, and organized for tests to be performed.
  • Counting and maintaining reagent inventory.
  • Reviewing and evaluating test results for validity before entering test results into the laboratory software. Must be able to identify results that are inconclusive and/or invalid.
  • Ensuring the schedule/pacing for specimen testing is met, and scheduling of equipment maintenance and calibration must be followed.
  • Correctly inputting medical test results into the laboratory software, and in a punctual manner, especially for STAT specimens. Test results that are problematic must be correctly communicated to other appropriate laboratory personnel.
  • Consistently and correctly following the established steps of scientific protocols.
  • Performing reagent preparations correctly and doing so without allowing contamination to occur. Knowledge of how to dilute solutions is also necessary. Must be competent in safely handling and preventing exposures to any potentially biohazardous chemicals and reagents.
  • Must be proficient with the practice of aseptic technique, and knowledge of how to properly sterilize surfaces and equipment is essential.
  • Using micropipettes, including automated multichannel micropipettes, and maintaining sterility of the specimens and reagents worked with. Understanding why pipette tips must be changed between samples is required.
  • Correctly inputs information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Basic computer literacy is required.
  • Performing routine equipment maintenance, calibration, and cleaning.
  • Following laboratory rules and regulations, including correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), HIPAA information management, handling of biohazardous material, taking necessary precautions with patient specimens which may contain bloodborne pathogens (this includes COVID-19).
  • Must be able to cooperate as a team player, get along with other laboratory workers, and avoid conflicts with other workers.
  • Performing routine Bacterial culture and identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)
  • Fungal, parasitic, and mycobacterial microscopic examinations
  • Participate in quality assurance and proficiency testing programs to maintain laboratory compliance
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications & Skills:

  • 3-5 years of Microbiology laboratory experience
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field
  • Certification as a Microbiology Medical Technologist (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent)
  • Analytically and logically evaluates information to resolve problems
  • Follow guide, SOP or other step by step procedures for locating the source of a problem and fixing it
